Day 22: Fishing
Up early enough to watch the sunrise from our deck. And after our late night getting out of bed was tough!!
It was a gorgeous day, hardly a cloud in the sky. We ventured out for our first ever marlin fishing trip! Although no luck today – hardly a bite. Darn!
I had no idea there was so much involved to catch a fish. Captain (Zack) from Faial Island and his Skipper (Andrew) from Florida (yes… an American!). One of the best fishermans in the area and with quite the setup too. We had 5 lines in the water and 2 teasers.
Jim got the lesson on how to reel them in – chained into a chair, standing up and down, reeling in the line. Intense! Too bad we didn’t get a chance to capture that on camera!
We left Madalena at 9am and went straight to the south side of the island where the Marlin are rumored to be. No luck there. Got a call that there was some tuna and dolphins on the north side of Faial so gave that a shot next.
Plenty of dolphin! We slowed down and let the kids sit on the front of the boat. You could hear the dolphins communicating with each other. So cool!
We spent the rest of the day napping, trying not to get sea sick and zig zagging around Pico Island looking for fish. All the kids were great! Luke and Ashley never even had the slightest stomach ache (jealous!). I on the other had realized I only felt good if my eyes were closed, and unfortunately that took a few hours for me to discover. So I spent most of the day napping. Not a bad place to nap though as we cruised around the island.
Finally packed it up and headed in around 6pm. Guess it wasn’t our day. Might have to try one more time before we leave.
